What is a WiFi QR Code?
A WiFi QR code encodes your network name (SSID), security type, and password into a standard QR format that smartphones can decode natively. When someone scans it with their iPhone (iOS 11+) or Android camera (Android 9+), the device automatically prompts them to join the network — no manual entry needed.
The format is called MECARD WiFi and looks like this internally:
WIFI:T:WPA;S:MyNetworkName;P:MyPassword;;

How to Create a WiFi QR Code (Step by Step)
Open the WiFi Tab
Go to freeqrgenerator.mythosh.com and click the WiFi tab at the top of the generator.
Enter Your Network Name (SSID)
Type your WiFi network name exactly as it appears in your device's WiFi list. This is case-sensitive.
Choose the Security Type
Select WPA/WPA2 for most home and office networks. Choose WEP only for older routers. Select None for open networks that have no password (not recommended for security).
Enter the Password
Type your WiFi password. Leave blank for open networks. The QR code updates in real time in the preview panel.
Customise (Optional)
Use the Customise section to change colours or add a "Connect to WiFi" text label. Then download at 500px for standard use or 1000px for printing on a framed sign.

Is It Safe to Use a WiFi QR Code?
A WiFi QR code does encode your password inside the pattern — anyone who scans the code can view the raw data. This means:
- The QR image itself should be treated as sensitive. Don't post it publicly online.
- Anyone who photographs the QR code gains network access. Display it in controlled areas only.
- For guest networks: create a separate guest SSID with limited bandwidth and access. Encode that password instead of your main network's password.
- Your password is never sent to any server when using our generator — everything is processed in your browser.
Does a WiFi QR Code Work on All Phones?
Yes, with one caveat:
- iPhone (iOS 11+): Open the Camera app, point at the QR code, tap the notification banner.
- Android (Android 9+ / Pixel): Open the Camera app, point, tap the popup.
- Samsung (One UI 2.0+): Use the Camera app or the QR scanner in the notification shade.
- Older Android (pre-9): Download a QR code reader app like "QR Code Reader" from the Play Store.
What Happens If I Change My WiFi Password?
Since our QR codes are static (data is baked into the pattern), you'll need to generate a new QR code with the updated password and reprint it. This is why we recommend using a separate, simpler guest password that you change less frequently. If you need a QR code that can be updated without reprinting, you'd need a dynamic QR code service (which typically requires a paid subscription).
